Yeah that would be funny. What was the name of that town Starlight said she 'acquired' the staff of sameness from again? I don't recall her mentioning any place she got the staff from (until she admitted it was just a stick she found in the desert), and a quick search of the episode transcript didn't turn up anything along those lines either. Starlight just claimed it belonged the the great mage Meadowlark. And Twilight later mentioned that Meadowlark was an "eastern unicorn".

Oh meadowlark is a pony! Right, I misheard that part. Here's me thinking that it was a town. Has meadowlark ever been mentioned before? P.S: thank you guys for continuing to frequent this place, even though you could be in the TVtropes threads instead. I'd have left the fandom by now if it wasn't for all your loyalty, because I'd have no one to talk pony with. It means a lot to me believe me.

I'm pretty sure this is the first mention of mage Meadowlark. (It's nice to get another historical unicorn wizard besides Star Swirl the Bearded and Clover the Clever.) Some fans speculate that the real eight artifacts of Meadowlark are going to become important later in the season.
You know, Twilight lamented that she didn't study eastern unicorns as much as she should have. I wonder what that implies: Are they a particularly obscure branch of history and/or magic? An "easy" topic that Twi skimped on in order to focus on the harder topics? Or is she just being overly critical of herself again ("I only read five hundred articles about them, when I could have read a thousand!")?

I'm not sure if Meadowlark and the Eastern Unicorns are an actual set up for anything. Especially since the artifact turned out to be a fake.
We might see some stuff later on maybe, but I wouldn't hold out hope for anything specific.

I think twilight said that there's eight artefacts of Meadowlark but that was all. I wasn't sure because I was still distracted by Pinkie's chubbiness. I need to go watch it again to hear what was said.

It would be interesting if Meadowlark's artifacts became an overarching plot for the season. Good potential for historical exposition, I think.

Twilight mentioned that there were 8 artifacts not 9.
Again, I don't think that will necessarily be followed up on.

At first I thought that the season's arc would be based on tracking down the other artifacts, but once they revealed it to be a fake, I chalked it up to worldbuilding. Also, inB4 Meadowlark/Star Swirl shipping.
As for Twilight's knowledge about Eastern Unicorns, my take is just that magic is a very wide subject, and that's a particular branch of it that Twilight hadn't focused on. In pretty much any academic field, the deeper you go, the more you tend to specialize. Twilight probably decided to prioritize more local stuff. She has a vague knowledge of eastern unicorn magic, but it's not something she went in-depth in.

Also, inB4 Meadowlark/Star Swirl shipping. Worldbuilding is always great. And Meadow Swirl...Star Lark...Bearded Meadow? All the pieces are there, we just have to put it together. And yeah, Twilight can't be a complete expert at everything.

Their kid could be named Starling.

The phrase "eastern unicorn magic" makes me think of alkahestry in Fullmetal Alchemist. That would be a weird direction for the show to go to.

Made me think of Asian styled magic. Which would be interesting, if a bit odd.

What would the difference in Eastern and Western magic be?
