Blood feuds, pony-style!
I'm not so sure about the actual plot of this episode, but I liked Twilight and Fluttershy in it.

I was surprised the solution didn't come from the fact that the Hooffields could supply what the McColts needed, and vice versa. (Also, I get the names mixed up, who does what again?)

That would have been one way to solve the problem.
In fact, I read a few comments on Fimfic from people complaining that the episode didn't go for that solution—claiming that was the most realistic solution to the problem, and that "Think of the children! I mean, animals," was an unrealistic/naive resolution. I say nuts to that. There's no guarantee either side would have put aside their grudge just for their own benefit. Even in real life, people will knowingly inconvenience/hurt themselves just to get at someone else. "Cutting off your nose to spite your own face" and all that.

Yeah, I hear that. I was surprised, but that's not to say it doesn't make sense in retrospect.
Though the reveal that they apparently care about local wildlife came out of nowhere, given how callous and/or ignorant they seemed to be about animal welfare prior to that.

I think both approaches would've had their pros and cons, though I can see why they'd decide not to go the "mutual interest" route. First, because it would've been so obvious, and second because like Meta said, it emphasizes the pointlessness of the conflict when it's clearly in their best interest to resolve the feud, but they still don't. That said, the "animal" thing really did sort of come out of nowhere. It would've helped if there had been a few moments showing them going out of their way to notice the animals rather than ignoring them. Nothing major, just a "wait, stop the pumpkin-ing until that rabbit is out of the way" or something.

Part of my problem with the episode was that I didn't really empathize with either side of the feud, so I only cared about the resolution because Twilight and Fluttershy cared. (In contrast with the previous map missions, which played off our interest in Gilda, or our sympathy for Coco Pommel.) I think the "mane characters intervene to resolve a long-running blood feud" plot would have been better served if the mane characters had some kind of connection to both sides. Of course, that would have made things even more complicated, because Twi and Flutters wouldn't have been a neutral third party any more...

Yeah, that would've been really tough to cram into one episode. Though you're right that it would've helped to give us a reason to get invested into the conflict.

I've read at least one fanfic where the Apple clan and Carrot Top's extended family have a long-running feud. I wonder if those would have worked as the two sides in this episode.
Of course, you'd have to change damn near everything else about the episode to either include Applejack, or explain why AJ wasn't included.

That and the fact that it would've been nigh impossible for the cast to remain impartial, and also it would be weird to have the feud be a major thing yet have it have never shown up before.

I just saw the episode. Not bad. What struck me most was seeing how teilights freeze spell has its limits. That and one of the McColts mares was animated using big macintoshes body. Big lass!

Indeed. I also loved how Fluttershy kept flinching at everything Twilight was doing. Very cute. I'm sorry too that I didn't post more reactions. I was so tired I practically went to sleep after watching the last three normal episodes. I just have to watch the season five finale and I'll be fully caught up. And I'll never let myself get this far behind with pony again.
