Blue eyes are kind eyes. That, and he does use lightning in medicine. Very doctor Frankenstein.

At first I was like, wouldn't wearing one of the first two make him a 'weirdo'. Then I realized, with what he wants to do, he is a weirdo. There's no escaping that. Since it's an airship though, perhaps a peaked cap would be best. The only way to be sure though is to try out all three.

So I made hats for him: Sorry those are so basic looking. I just wanted a general picture.

I dunno if the hat really works. It hides the pompadour. If you're going to give a character a hat, they can't really have a distinct hairstyle.

I don't know. I like the irony that he wears a hat to look impressive, but his huge pompadour is more eye-catching than the hat. Also raises the question of how he even fits his mane in there.
I think you could get the best of both worlds if he only wears the hat when he's on the ship. Or if he's just constantly losing his hat and finding it again.

The crown of the hat has been cut out so his pompadour sticks through. Everypony mistakes it for part of the hat until he takes the hat off.

I second Wryte's suggestion.

Something like, this: Alternatively, he could wear some sort of sun visor hat like this: which would show off his hair just fine. And make him look like a frat boy...is that good or bad?

I like the first idea. It'll have more impact if it's not immediately obvious that it's not part of his hat.

I tried out the sun visor: And that just looks boring. At first I was worried that a big piratey hat might be too much but then I remembered that Trixie wears a frigging wizard hat all the time and suddenly it seemed less ridiculous.

Yeah, the pirate hat definitely works better. That just makes him look like a tennis player.

I genuinely laughed, thank you. So yeah, I guess a bircorne or tircorne hat could work. I would have to put some work into it though to make it look good enough. One last idea that just came to me though and which I thought I'd check out with you guys first though was a skull cap. You know Link? From Zelda, the game series I wished I played? He wears a sort of medieval style take on a skull cap. What about something like that but with a more modern twist on it? Since Equestria is like that. The design I had in mind would also display the front of his hair. EDIT: Nope. Forget the skull cap. Tried a few designs. They were so terrible I can't even post them here.

Hey guys, latest update (I'm such a night owl ) I think I have a decent idea for Nightfall's hair. I figure, if I'm giving him a silly pirate hat then why not go the whole hog with his mane too? I haven't got a complete design drawn out yet as it's proving tricky to get right but this new hairstyle is basically a good old fashioned male pony tail design common to sailing types of the 16th-17th centuries. If I can try to describe what it'll look like...imagine something slightly similar to Caramel's hair, but with a ponytail as well. The good thing about this design is that it is very distinctive, yet it also allows a hat to be worn with it without too much being covered up. So I basically get the best of both words. And don't worry about that pompadour design. It will still be used...probably on the doc. EDIT: OK, did an incredibly rough mock up: That's kinda sucky I know, and isn't exactly how I want the finished design to look, but I hope it conveys what it is I'm going for.

Yep, it does. It looks like a good manestyle for him. I like it.
