Since they're canon, what sort of movies do you think exist in Equestria? I had an idea for a low budget b-horror movie called They Saved Sombra's Horn.

I bet the Daring Do fandom has so many arguments about whether the film adaptations are any good.
Or maybe Daring Do doesn't even get a feature-length film -- instead it's a series of shorts that play before the features.

I imagine it as being a sort of James Bond deal. An ongoign series that periodically gets rebooted and arguments about about which movies are good, which ones were better adaptations, whether that one movie with an original plotline was any good, etc.

Also I wonder if they ever have any historical movies.

Probably. Whether they have any about Celestia is an open question, as it would kinda be awkward to do a biopic of her when she's right there. Though it does raise the interesting possibility of her watching and MSTing the movie.

On the more serious side of things would be a series of long films (complete with intermission) which are adapted from the long series of historical novels known as "An Elegy of the Moon and Sun". The books chronicle the rising tension in Equestria before Luna's fall and the ensuing conflicts that erupted from it. It is one part War and Peace, one part Gone with the Wind, and one part Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with bits of Game of Thrones sprinkled throughout.
They are the kind of movies that are critically acclaimed and even considered culturally important with many iconic scenes such as: Luna's speech from the Red Bridge, the first Sacking of Canterlot, and the infamously graphic "Visitation of Dawn Glow by the Gray Guard" scene.
That being said I doubt that anyone in the cast save Twilight or maybe Rarity would have the fortitude for such films even if they were interested.

And then Celestia and Luna watch it and grumble about the historical inaccuracies.

I think they would be more perturbed about the choice of actors then anything else.
Luna would be annoyed at the inaccuracies though.

Can you imagine how awkward it would be for the actresses who have to play them?

Pretty awkward I'm sure.

I'm sure Celestia takes it all in good fun, besides she is probably used to it.
It's Luna I would be worried about. She would probably have more of a problem with. . .everything.

That is true. Tia is good natured even though most ponies don't seem to realise it but Luna? Poor girl is insecure.

Eh, maybe she would like the Opera version better.

Reminds me of one fanfic, where there's a very popular radio drama about the adventures of Totally Not The Mane Six.
It started off as a heavily fictionalized version of Nightmare Moon's defeat -- in this story, Celestia never publicized the details of her sister's return, but other ponies still saw the long night and wanted answers. So Celly let the radio drama give them answers, provided they made the heroines look less like their real counterparts.
And that first story arc was popular enough that the author started inventing new stories from whole cloth.
