Good? Great? Not good? Not at all?

I think they've found just the right balance in the main series, making occasional references to events in the TV show while still allowing the comic to be its own entity. I found the Micro-Series comics to be hit-or-miss. The Luna, Pinkie and Rarity issues were my favorites. The Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy issues fell flat, IMO. Bad writing and sub-par art. There are a few issues I still haven't read. AJ, the Crusaders and Spike. BTW, I love the way Andy Price draws Celestia and Luna's shoes, with the long dagger-spikes on the front. Those things should be registered as deadly weapons.

I never saw too much of the comics, but from what I see they do feel rather different from the show. I guess it does make sense since the comics and the show have (or at least are written for) somewhat different audiences.
While I suppose they synch mostly fine with the state of canon and what not, I don't think they synch nearly as well when it comes to things like tone, characterization, and humor

I looked at rainbows solo comic again and it really is off. It reads like an over the top fanfic.
But for the most part I think they do sync up pretty well. The characterisations are pretty good though and that's what matters.

I find most of them exist in that gray area of "They don't contradict the show, but they don't tie directly to it, either." The main series comics mostly fit, aside from the fact that some of the events are large-scale enough you'd expect them to be mentioned in the show if the events are canonical. The only real exception is the pirate one, which felt more like one of those "Alternate universe imaginary stories" that superhero comics do. You know, like those "What if Batman was a vampire?" type deals.
The micro comics mostly fit, though the Rainbow Dash issue is... odd. I don't think it's ''bad'', but it's far more experimental and weird than most of the others. Rarity, Pinkie, and AJ's were all really good. Twilight and Fluttershy's were alright; not terrible, but not as awesome as some of the others.
Anybody here read the Friends Forever series? The first one is a bit meh, but the next three were really good. I'm honestly kinda pissed that the Spike and Celestia one didn't get made into an actual episode.

I'm actually way behind with the comics but I aim to catch up fast.

I agree, something like this needs to happen in the show.

The Spike and Celestia one is amazing. The CMC and Discord one isn't quite as awesome, but still well worth reading; same for the Twilight and Shining Armor one. The Pinkie and Applejack story... it has the same issue that the RD Micro Series has in that it really doesn't capture the feel of the show well. It felt more like something out of The Powerpuff Girls than MLP.

Oh, wait. I read the Twilight and Shining Armor one. Guess I didn't find it that memorable after all.

I wonder if we'll ever see that Crystal Bard again.

As far as their canon fitting together... didn't one of the comic easter eggs imply that Twilight's mom was the author of Daring Do?

I think it did. How did we reconcile that issue?

The comic's reference was something like a plaque saying something about Daring Do hanging on the wall of their house. It never explicitly said that Twilight's mom got the award for writing the books, so it's possible to interpret it as it being an award named after the books or something.

I think it did. How did we reconcile that issue? 1. Twi's mom co-wrote some of the prior novels with AK Yearling. 2. Twi's mom writes officially licensed expanded universe novels. 3. The IDW comics are a separate universe, but most of the cartoon episodes still apply as the comic's backstory. Oh, wait, that last one isn't really reconciling anything.

My personal theory is that Twilight's mom likes writing for the sake of writing rather than for the money or fame, so she ghostwrites the books using Daring Do's notes and lets DD take the credit.
