Wow. Walk about a game changer. Where do we begin?
How about with the fact that their marks came with a pretty big magical display, and with near identical marks, they look almost tighter than even the mane six?

Yeah, the status quo took a pretty big hit in that one.

This was five years in the making (literally, the first episode aired October 10 2010). A very big moment for the show. We didn't exactly see princess twilight coming but this was a long time coming. What do we think?
I'm impressed that they didn't go with their talents which have been alluded to, but instead chose their calling to trigger the marks. Two distinctively separate but deeply connected things.
Also, the fact that all their marks are identical, and had a bigger and more elaborate creation than other marks we've seen before must be important. I don't remember the mane six being elevated into the air and almost fainting. Except for twilight. Either it's a minor recon or that was really special.

Actually, their marks aren't quite identical: they each have variations that represent their individual abilities. Sweetie Belle has a musical note, Apple Bloom has an apple (duh), and Scootaloo has a winged lightning bolt.

Oh yeah, of course. Still, their similarity is very noticeable.

This season's been juggling two themes: cutie marks, and the main characters educating/inspiring others. So it's only fitting that the CMC finally get their marks this season—cutie marks in helping other ponies fulfill the potential of their own marks.

I have a feeling that the content of this episode should have been more spread out. Diamond Tiara's development felt way too abrupt, for one. I'm all for her not being a complete jerkass anymore, but things changed way too fast to feel convincing.
Probably didn't help that this episode had way more singing in it than usual. Made the episode feel like it was hammering in a moral with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
On a different note, is it just coincidence that the inside of the apple forms a heart shape?

I think they made it a musical episode specifically because there wasn't any other way to fit that much plot into 22 minutes.

Oh well. The season's had several top-notch episodes by now, but they can't all be winners.

It would've helped if an earlier episode had shown DT doubting herself rather than being a straight RichBitch archetype in every appearance.

Yeah that was a little bit left field if I'm honest.
