I've been having a weird time with this one idea I've been tinkering with since forever. I originally wanted to do a sort of sequel fic to MMDW with Dash trying to be a hero again but her friends not exactly trusting her to do that.
I was thinking of what exactly would prompt Dash to want to be a hero again, and I didn't want it to just be some random accidents like in the original. I came up with this idea that the Everfree forest was getting a bit out of control and monsters were beginning to come in closer contact with Ponyville.
I think it works though I do wonder if the two ideas actually would work well together or if I should just focus on the monster stuff and not bog it down with MMDW stuff.

If it was me I'd stick with this MMDW angle, because just having random monsters coming out of the Everfree is a bit similar in a way to the evil roots from the start of season four, and would probably have either Fluttershy or Twilight centre stage when I definitely get the feeling that it's rainbow you want to write about.

Well, you are right that I would prefer to write about RD. It was meant to take place in late season two when RD wasn't doing so well.
It's interesting that you would say that a hypothetical story on the everfree forest would mostly likely involve Twilight and Fluttershy.

I figured that if monsters were involved, Fluttershy would be the one to sort it out, whereas if it's a magical disturbance then that would be Twilight's area of expertise. In the case of RD I would use either some sort of natural disaster or an actual villain she has to fight.

Well, even if a particular pony is more suited to solving a problem doesn't mean they have too. Besides, the choice for monster was because it feels like a more natural occurence for Ponyville then criminal villains, and the original MMDW kind of played out the disaster angle.
Also I like to think of it as a throw back to older fan fics where there was an emphasis on Ponyville being a small town at once peaceful and constantly at risk from the strange and terrible frontier of the Everfree.

Oh yeah, I forgot that element to it. Ponyville seemed so much smaller back then.

Yeah. It really started to feel "bigger" after MMDW funny enough. And then come Season Four it apparently has enough people living in it to field an olympic team that took home more medals then any of the other major cities in Equestria. Weird.

My personal headcanon for it is that after the Summer Sun Celebration in the pilot, more ponies started moving into town. The event put the town "on the Map" so to speak.
Anyway, yeah, I like the idea of having monsters from the Everfree forest causing trouble. There's lots of potential for bringing in monsters from folklore and such.

And now that you've put it like that; monsters do sound interesting.

If I didn't make myself clear, what I was worried about was that the MMDW sequel aspect and the whole "monsters coming out of the Everfree" wouldn't mix together and one would bog down the other. I think I can mix the character conflicts with the impending risk to Ponyville, but I was wondering if other people thought it would work.

I think, and JT would probably agree with me, that anything (well, nearly anything) can be made to work with work.

Yeah, pretty much. Execution trumps premise most of the time. What's important is to make sure that the premise occurs in such a way that it fits with the show and has an in-universe consistency.

Yes, that part I can't stress enough enough, staying in the spirit of the show. In the early days of the show when I could get the time to read fan fiction, I was repulsed by stories that used to have gratuitous death or 'drama' in them.

Eh, I'm not very good at the whole comedy thing I'm afraid, but character death was never on my mind so that's a plus I guess.

Eh, I'm not very good at the whole comedy thing I'm afraid, but character death was never on my mind so that's a plus I guess. It's a big plus. Too many in the fandom are willing to kill ponies, and killing ponies is bad, m'kay. As for comedy, I always try to inject it into everything I do, but I feel like the problem with that for me is, I'm just not funny.
