Decided to do thread about my fav game series, not only from it's genre (Space Sim) but from all games, all time. Maybe someone here played that too or would interested in checkering it out. Probably I could make this thread when both games (Freespace 1 and Freespace 2) were on sale on GOG, but they are now on Steam Sale.

Space Sim what in some can be considered spiritual successor for Wing Commander series (but with less movie stuff, with only few cutscenes). Considered as one of best if not best Space Sim series. Made by Volition, released by Interplay. In both games you control pilot who can fly space fighters and bombers in missions against other fighters and bigger crafts including giant capitol ships. First game, called Descend - Freespace: Great War (or Conflict - Freespace: Great War in European release). You are pilot of Galactic Terran Empire and serve in long war against alien race called Vasudans. But thats mostly backstory, from intro you will learn about third race, later named Shivans. They show up after few missions serving as Conflict Killer for current war, forcing both races to form alliance against invasion, what it's not even enough war turns into Hopeless War very quickly, because enemy have much superior technology and forces (imagine Reaper invasion from space pilot perceptive), even if some of those advantages become nullified over course of game they still posses some at very end of story. Game is rather grim and apocalyptic, especially supported by cutscenes with narration of some ancient race what was victims of Shivans. Game was excellent from technical (great graphic, engine allowing to show really big ships), gameplay and story/atmosphere point of view. Sequel , Freespace 2 is set decades after first game, where both races rebuilded after war and defeat of invasion forming Galactic Terran - Vasudan Alliance. It focus fight with racist terran rebelion but Shivans return. Story have more plot twists, conspiracies and hope spots than previous game. Have upgreaded engine, with new combat effect, even bigger ships and flying in nebula. I'm trying not to spoil to much. Game also have still active comunity what make new missions and mods, and thanks to released of source code of FS2 it allow fans to improve game to look good even today, it's Source Code Project Freespace or Freespace Open. More info hereAlso here intro for first game

It is. Both games currently cost little more than 4 euro. However buying it on Steam is risky, it have trouble working on newer systems and I don't know if allow to use mods without problems. Version on GoG dont have that complications from what I heard.
