So, recently I decided I wanted to write a fanfic for Christmas this year. It's been a long while since I've written anything, and I've been working on my game for the better part of a year now and it's beginning to drive me mad, so I thought a return to writing might be nice.
I started out with the vague idea of the CMC trying to go on a shopping trip in Canterlot and kinda getting lost, and getting into one of those daytime TV sort of cartoon Christmasspecials, what with the vaguely magical tramp, and lots of pretty imagery and the true meaning of Christmas and junk. Buuuut, it occurred to me that in all my fanficcing, I've actually never written one about any mane characters. So, maybe a return after a year of not writing wouldn't be the best time to cut my teeth on that.
Then another, similar thought occured to me: UK and North America have some different Christmastime traditions, so why wouldn't Equestria and Trottingham have different Hearth's Warming Traditions? (This, for the record, is in keeping with my general universe as revealed the last time I did a christmas story - a monk from the founding of Equestria travelled through the frozen wastes to Furheim(Germany/Nordics) and spread the word of Hearth's Warming, which then got picked up by it's neighbours and allies, Fancee(France as a military dictatorship) and Trottingham.
So the idea is this: Pipsqueak and Peeler, in their first year in Equestria, are a bit confused by some of the different traditions in Equestria on Hearthswarming, and missing some of their old traditions. So, Pipsqueak decides that as a present to his dad, he's gonna go out and find a bit of Old Trottingham! Unfortunately... I have only a pretty vague idea of what traditions the UK actually has, heh. So I figured, since our gracious host is Irish and I'm sure there are a few other people from the UK here as well, I'd ask you guys if there's anything that sticks out!
Just to give you an idea of what some traditions are around that time in Canada:
Turkey dinners are traditional(In my family we rarely eat it on the day of; my family is small and localized so there's usually one big get-together on Boxing Day where Turkey is had)
Crackers(Ie. the tubes that go pop) exist, but aren't common, and my family usually does them on New Years instead of Christmas.
Shortbread and sugar cookies are pretty much a must, and Gingerbread houses are commonly seen(At least as imagery) as well.
Santa lives somewhere in the undefined North Pole. His mailing address is H0H 0H0. Kids send him letters every years, and his industrious elves(Read: A bunch of volunteer mail peoples) write them all back.
Mistletoe is steryotypical, but not really seen all that much.
Christmas lights fuckin' everywhere, especially in cities.
That sort of thing. I'm looking for something tangible, preferably - my original idea was a mince pie but I'm not sure if that's accurately christmassy. Probably small. The kind of thing a kid could find, and get, but not too easily.
