Trolls are this alien species from Homestuck. They look like humans with gray skin and candy-corn-colored horns. They took center stage in Act 5, at exactly the same time that the Homestuck fandom exploded and became inescapable on the internet. Andrew Hussie legitimately thinks it was the trolls' romance shenanigans that were responsible for the HS fandom becoming one of the largest and most terrifying on the internet.
So, for largely the same reason that bronies made ponysonas, lots of Homestucks made trollsonas, or non-self-insert fantrolls.
Hussie declared at one point that all the fantrolls are canon. Especially the shitty ones.

They also consider buckets to be obscene, since they're involved in the trolls' reproductive process. Which makes pretty much anything involving buckets unintentionally hilarious.

I do like the headcanon that they occasionally (or frequently) prank each other.

I know. It just seems like a very out of character thing for Luna to do I think.

I like to imagine that Celestia is conflicted about whether it would appropriate to restart the prank war once Luna returns from the moon, as she's unsure whether it would be mean. Then Luna puts a whoopee cushion on her throne and then...

I don't get it. From the episodes I always got the impression that Luna was straight laced, serious one while Celestia was more casual and prone to jokes. When did people start thinking the opposite?

Probably when Luna became a fan favorite, and people started to project all manner of desired things-Luna-does-in-her-free-time tendencies.

I think it's largely that Luna was portrayed as a LargeHam in "Luna Eclipsed", and it's easy to take that personality trait and imagine her bothering Celestia with it. In short, we haven't ever seen Celestia and Luna interact in an informal circumstance, and RuleOfFunny dictates they spend time messing with each other.
