What's everyone's thoughts on them, now that Disney is in charge? As usual, I am eternally opportunistic.

I don't even know. It probably won't top the original trilogy, but it's got to be better than the prequels in terms of writing. At least we can rest assured that the effects will be good.

The effects will definitely be outstanding. I've seen some of what they're doing, and I'm pleased to say that they're returning to animatronics. Of course there will still be CGI, but it'll be greatly reduced overall. And the puppets look amazing.Writing has always been a problem with Star Wars though, right from the very start. You know the famous encounter between Obi-Wan and Vader on the Death Star? Vader says that now he's the master, and Obi replies that he's only a 'master of evil'...well Ben, that still makes him a master. Way to validate what he just said. If it was me I'd have Obi say something like 'you're no master. You're only a servant...to evil'. Something like that. Not to say that I'm a better writer than Lucas or anything like that of course.

I dunno, that's not that much of a stretch given what happens when Lucas doesn't have any editors to cover his weak points.

I dunno, that's not that much of a stretch given what happens when Lucas doesn't have any editors to cover his weak points. That became really noticeable in the prequels. At the time of the originals, George obviously wasn't as well known as he was now, and so the studios obviously had editors overlooking him and proof reading his stuff. Come the new ones, he's given a free hand to do what he likes and well, look how that turned out.

I'd also note that Empire Strikes Back, aka the generally most well-respected movie of the original trilogy, was directed by somebody else.

I'd also note that Empire Strikes Back, aka the generally most well-respected movie of the original trilogy, was directed by somebody else. Eeeyep, exactly. What these new movies do too however is make all Star Wars EU material (besides the clone wars) now count as Star Wars legends. They might be canon, they might not be canon, but it's irrelevant because they're all 'legends' now.

Well, Return of the Jedi was ALSO directed by somebody else, and it's my least favorite of the OT.

I gave up on the Star Wars franchise after The Phantom Menace. I read the bad reviews of II and III and decided they were to be avoided. Well, Return of the Jedi was ALSO directed by somebody else, and it's my least favorite of the OT. I didn't know that. It was also my least favorite up to that point. Watching the Ewok celebration at the end, I thought "What is this, The Muppet Movie?"

I'd agree that it's the weakest of the original trilogy. Still better than any of the prequels though.

Eh. If nothing else I expect a rather average, but aesthetically decent film.
I plan to watch it with a friend. . .about a month or so after opening in a hopefully empty theater. If it's bad we could at least snark openly.

I'm totally gonna give into the hype and see it on opening weekend. I'm weak.
A buncha people said that JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot felt more like a Star Wars movie than a Trek one. So I think Abrams' Star Wars movie is either going to rival the OT, or it's gonna be just a decent summer popcorn flick. And if the latter, its big failing will be that it tries too hard to emulate the OT and doesn't bring anything new to the table. (See also: the failure of Superman Returns.)

Either that or it'll inexplicably end up feeling more like a Star Trek movie.

Looking back on RotJ...yeah it's got its weaknesses.
