Anyone one of you Yankees watching it? The first match was very interesting...you can already work out where the corruption probably is. Also, rioters scare the presenters. Exciting start!

I don't really follow soccer (the only sport I even kinda follow is the NFL, and even then it's not very closely), but from what I heard on Sportcenter there was a rather questionable ref call.

I don't really follow soccer (the only sport I even kinda follow is the NFL, and even then it's not very closely), but from what I heard on Sportcenter there was a rather questionable ref call. There where actually two seriously suspect ref calls. First of all, Brazilian striker Neymar committed a terrible (and deliberate) foul yet was not sent off, where he went on to score two goals. Then there was the penalty awarded to Brazil that shouldn't have been a penalty. The game very obviously looked rigged. And there's a good reason for it; the climate in Brazil at the moment is, if Brazil go out early they will have riots. Big ones. Then of course FIFA are corrupt bastards. So yeah.

So basically they stacked it to make sure Brazil doesn't get ousted early?

So basically they stacked it to make sure Brazil doesn't get ousted early? Eeeyep. Well, to make sure they get their 3 points. This isn't the knockout stage just yet .

Then of course FIFA are corrupt Flim Flams. So yeah. Aren't there a lot of Brazilians wee weeed at having to host the World Cup in the first place? Because traffic in the area is already bad enough without thousands of fans football fans, and all that money spent on the stadium could have gone towards more pressing issues. If, on top of all that, their own team gets kicked out early, I can totally understand why there'd be riots.

Absolutely. They are basically angry at how the country seemingly has six billion dollars to host this game yet not a penny to reduce poverty. It's basically ordinary people veris big vested business interests.
Also, quick update, more questionable official calls made in the Mexico v Cameroon match; two legitimate goals by Mexico discounted for being offside; both by the same striker. That linesman might be quietly dropped after this match...

Obviously rigged? I only got to see a little of Brazil v. Croatia, but how could you tell that? And is this really that common in FIFA events?

Neymar was looking the other guy right in the eyes seconds before he turned around, and 'accidentally' elbowed him in the face. That is worth a red but he only got a yellow. Then there was that penalty. Basically Brazil was shown tremendous leniency while Croatia got heavily penalised.
And it's fairly common. FIFA are corrupt to the core. I could start on the whole Qutar thing but I'd be here all day.

Hmm, well whatever. I'm more of a club guy anyway. These kinds of national team things get to ugly for my taste.

It's because politics comes into play in international tournaments. I suppose it's hard for you Americans since you only play with yourselves. [beat]... Anywho, latest update: Mexico deservedly won 1-0, and tonight we have Chile V Australia and most importantly and exciting of all, Holland V Spain!

The politics and nationalism is bad enough at the club level, national level must be absolutely atrocious. It's why I only bother to follow international football at the olympic level, and then only the female teams (this of course has nothing to do with the fact that our women's national team is better then our men's national team ). And i'm more then aware that American sports is nothing if not masturbatory. Might tune in for Netherlands and Spain though.

Sports rivalries as a thing kind of confuse me, honestly. Especially since so often, it's not like the players are actually from there.
Well, that might be different for futball clubs. the only close-to-home sport that people care about here is Hockey, and regardless of location like a solid 75% of NHL players are Canadian. And most of them from Quebec. And yet, the sheer bile during the Canadiens-Bruns matches during the playoffs...
Well. I guess I'm not much of a sportball guy to begin with. Haven't really been paying much attention to FIFA aside from coworkers talking about it. I'm close to the localization team at work, so there's lots of people from a loooot of different countries around.

It's because at this level it's a national pride thing. In the past we fought wars. These days we play the World Cup.
