To be honest you are talking about pretty superficial stuff. One of the big points that I was saying was that all of these supposed changes can (and in fact do) mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. So even if people can and do complain about these superficial things, you actually get the worst of both worlds by having these superficial things that remain superficial. To be honest, you're probably in a slim minority in thinking that the changes to Twilight are superficial.

Possibly. Why do you think they are significant though?

Possibly. Why do you think they are significant though? It's been my personal belief for some time...a gut feeling, if you'll indulge me...that Twilight is meant to be Celestia's eventual successor. I believe it's her destiny to one day rule over Equestria, with her friends at her side. I think of Twilight becoming an alicorn princess as a significant step in her destiny. I could be wildly off the mark here, of course. Who knows? It's just fun to speculate on how the series will end.

I too seriously believe that that is where the series is ultimately heading for its grand finale. Although hopefully not for a long time yet.

And then we get a spinoff about Celestia and Luna as they go on a road trip throughout Equestria, now that they're finally free of all that Princess nonsense.

You are probably not that far off the mark, and I can see this being the eventual end point for Twilight. However, until we reach that end point the journey has to be interesting and these changes have to actually effect things beyond progress towards a hypothetical end point. In that way I feel I'm more then justified in saying that the developments are superficial. And then we get a spinoff about Celestia and Luna as they go on a road trip throughout Equestria, now that they're finally free of all that Princess nonsense. *Yawn*

So are you ultimately saying that the accession to alicornhood, the acquiring of the rainbow power and the gift of the castle have not really changed Twilight as a character at all, and that in this regard the show is basically not truly advancing forward?

Well, yes and no. The show does not revolve completely around the character development of Twilight and Twilight does not need to develop as a character to progress. However I feel that the show has kind of gone out of it's way to avoid the developments and implications surrounding Twilight's ascension, especially when it's things that would effect things beyond Twilight herself.

To be fair, the show's been like that from day one. You'd think the whole "turning Nightmare Moon back into Princess Luna" bit would make the cast at least semi-famous. I'm not saying that it nullifies the problem, but it's hardly something new. At this point, I just sort of accept the fact that most of the really big occurrences are nowhere near as important in Equestria.

What I'm hoping for is that from season five onwards they finally become famous, since they defeated the guy who messed up the whole country by personally attacking everyone and earned a big castle that dominates the surrounding landscape for the effort.
And who are you thinking of analysing next Mio?

Seriously, how many times do they have to save Equestria to get some respect? They can't even get a taxi! Princess Twilight: Please, won't you let (Rarity) have this taxi? She has somewhere very important to be right away! Pedestrian pony who sounds like Bender: Not likely! She can get in line like the rest of us! Princess Twilight: O-kaaay. Now listen up! I'm Princess Twilight, motherbuckers! My friends and I have saved your ungrateful plots ten times over! Now, you either let my friend have a taxi, or I'll personally send you to Tartarus where you can be a fire hydrant for a three-headed dog! Understand?!? Okay, that last part didn't happen, but it should have.
