Since Mandatory Fun came out, I've been binging my old Weird Al stuff. Classic:

I'm listening to Mouth Sounds right now. It's a mashup mixtape by Niel Cicierega (the guy behind "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", Lemon Demon, Potter Puppet Pals, Brodyquest, Animutation, and I'm sure there's some other stuff I'm forgetting). It's equal parts amusing and unsettling. It's the music you play at your 90s nostalgia-themed party when you want your guests to leave already, dammit. It's the music from that fever dream about Mike Meyers you had that one time. It's ... well ... Smash Mouth actually sounds pretty good mashed up with Daft Punk, and I don't know what to believe in anymore. www.neilcic.com/mouthsounds/Well...that certainly was...somethin'. o.O I listened to the whole thing, mostly because I couldn't look away. Nirvana and Michael Jackson? Enya, Santana and Smash Mouth? "Chocolate Rain"? I'd say the whole thing went off the rails from pretty much the first note. I feel the strange urge to listen to this again. Help me.

The moment that broke my mind was Homer "D'oh!"-ing in time to Dave Matthews Band.

Everyone likes a good out-of-genre cover. Here's "Call Me Maybe" played by a goth band.
The musician is a pretty cool guy. I asked him if there was any way to get his new album lossless quality (rather than mp3s) and he burned a copy of the album and mailed it to me for free.

The only requirement for being in the Portsmouth Sinfonia was that you had to have no experience playing the instrument you were about to play. Here they are serenading us with "Also Sprach Zarathustra".

Okay, that was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. The fact that they synced it to the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey only makes it better.

Someone on TVT introduced me to the Otamatone, and now I need to share the joy and wonder with all of you. The Otamatone is a battery-powered synthesizer invented in Japan. Like you would expect from a Japanese creation, it's frickin' adorable. It looks like a musical note with a cartoon tadpole face. As best I can tell, you play it by moving your finger up and down the stem to control the pitch, and control the volume by squeezing its "face" to open and close it's "mouth". Unfortunately, it sounds like ... well, I don't want to spoil that. But to give you an idea, I realized that TVT's "Cute But Cacaphonic" article really needed a bullet point about the Otamatone. And when I went to add it, I saw someone else had beaten me to it. Videos, arranged roughly in order of increasing weirdness: "Greensleeves" cover.Demonstration of the Otamatone JUMBO, playing a snippet from "The Star Spangled Banner". Jimmy Hendrix, eat your heart out. "Silent Night" cover.Yes, all three of those above videos were by the same guy. "Fly Me to the Moon" cover. (Specifically the version from Neon Genesis Evangelion.) The dangling Rei doll is a very nice touch. "Hotel California" cover. (Original by the Eagles.) "Red" cover. (Original by King Crimson.) The glasses are a very nice touch. This is where the videos get particularly scary. Because the people playing are actually pretty good. "Mr. Mr." cover. (Original by the J-Pop band Girls Generation.) Rock, rock on."World's End Dancehall" cover. [Original by the Vocaloid producer wowaka (genjitsutouhi-P).] I don't know about you guys, but that all makes me feel like everything is awesome.

Since it's Christmas season now, I thought I'd post this infamous video. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does:

Songs mocking Christmas aren't that uncommon—in fact, there's an entire TV Tropes article about Anti Christmas Songs. But an anti-Christmas song from a Christian industrial band, on a Christian record label? That's a bit surprising. That's "Christmas Wishes" by Backwoods, from the Flying Tart compilation Christmas in Heaven.

Rage Against The Machine made it to Christmas Number One here, as a big F U to the X Factor.
