Season 6 is upon us! I thought it got off to a pretty good start all things considered. I was a bit leery going into it since they're trying to incorporate a lot into it (both the introduction of the baby and Starlight's subplot), but I thought they balanced the two really well and the episode was paced much better than most two-parters. As in, they actually had a denouement rather than ending right after the climax 2 minutes before the end of the show. My only real critique is that Starlight's subplot could've done with a bit more development, but that would've thrown off the pacing, so I can't complain too much about it. As for Starlight herself, I'm not sure I'd consider myself a fan yet, but I do think that they handled her about as well as they could given the circumstances of her introduction. The real pleasant surprise in these episodes was Spike; he was actually competent and helpful the whole way through and had a pretty good rapport with Starlight. He even gives Twilight some valuable advice near the end. It's really nice that they showed that he can make valuable contributions to the team. He's still kind of childish, but he has enough maturity that he's really believable as an assistant to Twilight rather than just her lackey. I hope they keep that up for the rest of the season, since it's cool to not see him being the butt monkey whenever he's in the spotlight. Also, this happened: So there's that.

I don't think it had any "HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING" moments, but it did strike me as a real solid episode. I like where they're going with Starlight. Particularly during her little rant to Sunburst, where you could hear a bit of her old villainous personality. I guess instead of being angry at the world, now she's angry at herself. My only real critique is that Starlight's subplot could've done with a bit more development, but that would've thrown off the pacing, so I can't complain too much about it. I think they could have spent less time with Sunburst lying about his job as an important wizard—and everyone around him utterly failing to notice that he's lying—and more time with... I don't know. Starlight and Sunburst doing something else.

Also: that alicorn baby is the best MLP villain yet.

I liked this two-parter. It's probably going to become my favorite.
Did anyone else notice a mysterious speck flying toward the Crystal Empire in the second episode right before they cut to credits?

Not at the time, no. I just saw the screenshots.

I saw the screenshots, yeah.
Anyway, I like how they didn't have to include a villain to make the conflict work. It would've used up quite a bit of time that they ultimately used on other stuff.
