So yeah, this episode. I think it's one of the best ones of the season so far next to "Amending Fences". The "villain" is a bit one-note in his jerkishness, but other than that the characterization and such are spot on. And I think the songs in this episode are some of the best ones of the season.
Also, this is definitely the best AJ episode since "Applebuck Season". For once they manage to give her her own plotline that doesn't get hijacked by her family or shared with other mane cast members.

In this episode: the writers stop trying to pretend that Applejack is anything less than perfect. So instead of learning anything herself, she solves somepony else's problem.
That very first song gave me intense flashbacks to church youth group.

Is it natural for a little girl to have the singing voice of a fully-grown adult? That was maybe the only thing that felt off about this episode.

Well, she is supposed to be an oddly good singer. And a girl having a more mature voice isn't impossible just uncommon. Case in point.

You know what I would have liked from this episode? If that scene with Rara panicking before her final show had been expanded to a proper subplot. Something like:
When Rara fires Svengallop, actually show him taking everything of his when he leaves: the costumes, stage decorations, backing dancers, backing musicians (or pre-recorded tracks, more likely), everything. Rara realizes that she has to perform a show with nothing but a bare stage to stand on, and her own voice. She panics, and the concert organizers rush to her aid. Cue the montage of various Ponyville citizens doing their part to make the final show actually happen. As the show takes shape under Rara's direction, she keeps swinging back and forth between excitement at her creative freedom, and abject terror that her old fans won't like her doing anything different or new.
Then the concert happens, and all is right with the world.

Somehow I doubt there would have been enough screentime for that. Not without the execution of the episode starting to feel rushed, anyway.

Agreed. It's a good idea, but there was no way to fit all that into the episode.

Bit of a random thought: What if the episode went in a different direction? Like, Rara didn't have a controlling manager like Svengallop, but she intentionally chose to take her singing career in a direction that Applejack (initially) didn't agree with? You know, pop songs and autotune and whatnot.

That could've been interesting, exploring how different tastes can cause issues, though the one thing is that despite what fanfics would have us believe, I don't think AJ would really object to her decision to sing in a certain genre. Now, if they made it clear that it was the message that AJ had reservations with (i.e. the materialism, or the over-emphasis on being famous and glamorous, and that side of things), it could work. Like in a "lots of fillies and colts look up to you and you should be mindful of that" kind of way.

So, Countess Coloratura is most likely a parody of Lady Gaga. But if you think about it, Rara was a bit more subdued than Lady Gaga really is.
Congratulations, Lady Gaga, you are literally more cartoonish than a cartoon character.

Probably one of the top three AJ episodes. And why is stressed out Pinkie Pie always so funny?

Yeah that was a really great one for AJ. Mainly because it was actually about her and didn't have her family take up most of the spotlight.

Exactly. It's crazy that we had to wait five seasons for that!

Well, Applebuck Season was better about that, but that was a long time ago.
